Overview of Implant Placement
The Dental Implant Surgical Procedure
Placing a dental implant typically takes 30 to 60 minutes for a single implant, and 2 to 3 hours for multiple implants. The exact timeline depends on your specific case and the number of implants required. Before surgery, patients may receive antibiotics and options like IV sedation or nitrous oxide for added comfort. Local anesthesia is always used to numb the treatment area. Once numbed, a small incision is made in the gum to expose the bone. A space is then created using specialized tools, and the titanium implant is carefully positioned. Sometimes the implant remains visible; other times, it is covered during healing.

  • Tooth Loss – The site after extraction.
  • Healed Bone – Bone ready for implant.
  • Implant Placed – Titanium post inserted.
  • Healing – Bone fuses with the implant.
  • Implant Restored – Final crown placed.
Healing duration depends on your bone health and implant location. Some implants can be restored immediately, while others require a healing period with follow-up visits. A healing cap or abutment may be used to shape the gum tissue. In some cases, impressions for the final crown are taken during the initial visit, expediting the restoration process. Soft tissue grafting may also be used to enhance gum contour around the implant for a natural look. After healing, your custom crown is placed, completing the restoration.

When Are Dental Implants Placed?

Most implants are placed a few months after tooth extraction, allowing the area to heal. If conditions permit, immediate placement may be possible, reducing treatment time.

If bone has resorbed due to prolonged tooth loss, bone grafting may be recommended to rebuild the area and provide a stable foundation.

How Many Implants Will I Need?

In general, one implant is used per missing tooth. For molars or teeth with multiple roots, a wider or specially designed implant may be necessary to provide extra support.
