Following your tooth removal procedure , it’s essential that a blood clot develops at the extraction site to control bleeding and begin the healing process. Bite down on a gauze pad for 30–45 minutes right after your visit. If bleeding continues, place a new gauze pad and apply firm pressure for another 30 minutes. This may need to be repeated a few times.
Once the blood clot forms, it’s crucial not to disturb it. Avoid rinsing forcefully for the first 24 hours, do not use a straw, smoke, or drink alcohol for the first week. You may brush your teeth the morning after surgery, but take care around the surgery site. No electric toothbrush for two weeks. These activities can dislodge or dissolve the clot and delay healing. Also, refrain from strenuous physical activity for the first one week, as it may increase bleeding.
It’s normal to experience some discomfort and swelling after an extraction. Applying an ice pack to the area can help reduce swelling. Most swelling will peak 2-3 days after surgery and then should subside.
If pain medication isn’t effective, please contact our office. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them as directed for the full course, even if you start feeling better. Stay hydrated and eat soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction. You may resume your regular diet after four to five days if comfortable.
